THE ROUTE OF THE SILLAR 

DURATION: 4 HOURS.

ITINERARY:

We start the tour by the main square, Chilina bridge and viewpoint of Yanahura, here you are given a time for the explanation of the guide and to take pictures taking advantage of the beautiful scenery offered by the volcanoes, you can also taste the traditional ice cheese and fritters arequipeños, also will be a tour of the square of Yanahuara to appreciate the church San Miguel Archangel and architecture so characteristic of this area.
Later we go to Añashuayco located in the district of Cerro Colorado 45 minutes from the city (downtown) there begins the sillar quarries.
We will walk through a canyon of volcanic lava commonly known as «sillar stone» appreciating the whole process of extraction by force of combo and barreta where we can interact with the help and instruction of the stonemasons who will assist you very kindly and you can take as a souvenir the extracted material and you can also take pictures with the quarries that have a height of up to 30 meters high as the impressive carvings in high relief which highlights the cathedral, the coat of arms of Peru, Arequipa among others.
The «alarifes» or stonemasons have molded the canyon of volcanic lava in the course of decades extracting and carving the material being them the architects of the construction and reconstruction of the White city.
It highlights the importance of this place making known why they were declared cultural heritage of the nation and is more considered a living culture of Arequipa.
For this same fact Arequipa is considered as cultural heritage of humanity by UNESCO.
